Boys go big at Quiksilver Pro Junior

April 7, 2010

Small surf, gutless conditions and some stiff competition didn’t faze the Bilt crew at the recent Quiksilver Pro Junior and King Of The Groms.

Young Jarred Veldhuis was on fire on his backhand at North beach, stringing together combinations of turn, big backhand hooks, reverses and power hooks to advance all the way to the finals of the U16 King Of The Groms. It looked like the Kommetjie local was going to go all the way through to win the event and head off to France and compete in the International King Of The Groms event, but it was not to be and he was stopped short in the man-on-man final. Slade Prestwich took the final but Jarred surfed good all the way through.

In the Quiksilver Pro Junior, Beyrick de Vries looked like he was going to take it as well. He had been surfing insane all event and most people had good money on him doing well, and he was flying on his Bilts in the small surf. He had a tough final against Shaun Joubert from Mossel Bay and despite the lead swinging back and forth a few times, Beyrick was beaten in the dying seconds by Joubert, who hooked into one good wave.

Still, more to come from these surfers. Beyrick is off to Scotland to compete in the O’Neill Cold Water Classic, so who knows, he could kill it.

Duncan Scott having a go at Massive Mullagmore on his Bilt sled

March 26, 2010

Mullagmore Castle sits on a cliff in Ireland looking over a massive left barrel. For many years it was considered unrideable, until the skis came along and made many of these unconquerable bommies legit. Check it out – not the best video but it’s all there.

Duncan Scott joins the team…

March 26, 2010

The main reason is because he simply loves Elton’s boards. Mainly tow boards, but Duncan has been riding them for a while now, through some big swells in Cape Town, and some of those giant waves in Ireland. There is a lot happening in Ireland right now, with some new slabs being found and some big waves being surfed.

Duncan is going to be based in the Eastern Cape but will be jetting over to Ireland and down to Cape Town through the winter swells. he will be surfing exclusively on Bilt surfboards…

What’s Dooma Up To pt2.

WE continue on with our little conversation with outspoken Bilt Team Rider Dooma.

So what do you think about those skinny black jeans and ripped up jerseys like those cats from Northern Sydney wear?

Hells no, not for me. I mean, I’m not wearing the skater baggy jeans but I am a surfer not a fashion victim…

Are you ever going to talk about all the things that go on tour but stay on tour?

Yeah that’s what my blogs gonna be about and a book one day. Someone is got to cash in on it eventually might as well be me.

Who is blowing it on the South African surf scene right now?

All the groms right now. Jordy and the boys have paved the way for these guys all they have to do is step up and stop acting like rock stars, and the sponsorship and opportunities will be endless.

What’s wrong with South Africa right now?

The only thing wrong with South Africa is its to far from everywhere and its expensive to travel from Also the chicks at home
dont like my accent cause I sound like every other monkey.

What is your favourite American takeaway and why?

In and out burger its amazing and they only have three options on the menu.

How come you just can’t seem to pick up weight?

Maybe its the AIDS  hahahah. Naah I weigh more then people think. I don’t want to be heavy i am big enough,

Have you had a good run with USA chicks or do you get Jordy’s seconds?

I got my own legion this side, and me and Jordy go for different types of chicks,  but I have a cool chick now and he is chasing my old scraps now hahahahah….

What’s Dooma Up To? pt1

March 17, 2010

Damian ‘Dooma’ Fahrenfort has been on the Bilt team for a long time, and is always first to claim Elton Fursman and his shapes. Domma competes on the WQS and the local South African circuit, and can usually be found hanging with Jordy around the world. Here are some of his thoughts -

on Elton Fursman:

Elton is a pretty quite guy and even though he is one of the most well-known shapers in South Africa he keeps to his spots. When he comes down and watches his team riders surf, he keeps it low key so no one can see him. He is a true South Beach local and doesn’t care much for New Pier or North Beach.n

On ‘magic boards’:

Eltons has got my boards so down that I can take a brand new board and ride it in a heat. I am that confident in his shaping that I know it’s gonna go as good as the last, or better.

On the best wave ridden on one of Elton’s boards:

I had like a twelve foot second reef Backdoor wave on this gun he made me. I was way under gunned but the board was made for the barrel and some how it held its edge and I got my biggest barrel on it.

On worst wipeouts:

Probably on the same trip. I pulled into a Pipe closeout and destroyed my ankle and scraped my face on the reef. The board just got obliterated.

On Perry Hatchett getting fired:

Perry getting the sack is the best thing that could have happened to the sport. He was a handbrake on pro surfing, and I just hope that he hasn’t scared the other judges brains so much that they still can function..

On under rated surfers:

There are so many guys that are under rated but for me these guys that are finding those slabs in oz and stuff are where it’s at.

On under rated surfspots.

New Pier in Durban. Most people don’t realise how good it is and how often it used to get good.

and on that note…. wait for pt 2 coming soon.

Davey Weare Summer Bowls Session Part 2

March 12, 2010

Some more summer bowl ripping from Davey Weare..

Davey Weare ripping some fun Durban bowls

March 11, 2010

When summer comes to Durban it is usually a time of ridiculously hot weather and onshore winds, accompanied by the odd flurry of cyclonic activity and a few days of barrels. Sometimes there are a couple of cyclones through the season, and some years there are none at all.

So what does one do if there are no cyclones and the same old Durban weather? Hit the bowls. Davey Weare has been smashing the bowls this year, getting his small wave surfing and onshore ripping to a new level. Check out this video shot by Davey’s little boet.

Jason Ribbink Part 2

March 6, 2010

This is the second part of the video on Jason Ribbink, by Kaleb Lovendie. So many different boards for different conditions, all shaped by Elton Fursman. While Jason is the man behind Bilt, the real person behind the surfboards is Elton Fursman.

Jason Ribbink part 1

March 1, 2010

Jason Ribbink is the man behind Bilt Surfboards. Whether it be a standard Bilt shortboard for the waves of Durban, or a gun for the waves of Dungeons, to a Bilt SUP, Jason has all angles covered. Currently recovering from a  leg injury, Jason will be back in the water shortly.

Check out this video clip, and watch closely when it comes to the Dungeons section…
